RHINOCEROSThe people: Elektra Records' 'project supergroup', a bunch of talented musicians poached from Buffalo Springfield, Iron Butterfly, the Mothers Of Invention, The Electric Flag and Toronto's premier R&B act, Jon Lee And The Checkmates. The music: A highly original blend of R&B, funk and soul. Overlooked and air-brushed out of the history of rock, the band's eponymous debut set from 1968 - which was recorded in live takes with no overdubs is an essential purchase. They accompanied David Ackles on his debut album. Where are they now?: Keyboard player Michael Fonfara led Lou Reed's road band throughout the late '70s. Danny Weis played with Rick James and drummer Billy Mundi did copious sessions. Singers John Finley and Alan Gerber are still active on the live scene, while later-day drummer Duke Edwards runs the Louis Armstrong Foundation in New Orleans.
