I just got done ordering the first three albums on CD ...no in a search for Blackstone "On The Line" .....I just don't understand why this band with such talent and brilliant song writing , are complete unknowns ...it was the same with Cactus.. I just don't get it. Rhinoceros had trademark sounds and vocals that were I'd know them from the style they ...In fact "Qualified " again show the brilliance of John Finley composition.... now I need to find the album

After hearing those samples from the first album, I just want to say that Rhinoceros brings back alot of old memories of Rick and Lindsay and I. I really loved to listen to Apricot Brandy. I am going to go out and buy the album, breathe some life into those old ghosts.

I really enjoy Rhinoceros, so happy to have found this great web site.
I have had the three LPs for years, and found Danny Weis & Jerry Penrod to be an important part of the Iron Butterfly sound too. I wish that band could have gone on to do & record more, but thankfully at least we have Heavy.

I am a musician and music fan with a passion for collecting rare recordings as well as great albums.

I have never come across any live Rhinoceros recordings anywhere, and was wondering if any concert going fans, or band members have any live tapes of this terrific band??

I would so much love to get a hold of anything, no matter the quality..If anyone would be so kind as to make contact with such info, that would be wonderful. I have a lot of various recordings by many great artists to trade.

Man, Rhinoceros Was the best rockin blue-eyed soul band ever. I learned the nastiest licks on Hammond Organ from Mike Fonfara. Im a former member of Atlanta Ga.:s Mothers Finest and Later of Blackfoot. Saw Mike play with Tycoon in Memphis in 1979. While playing at Cotton Carnival with my Band Whiteface. I can't believe I finally found this. My band back in the Sixties did a nasty cover of 'Apricot Brandy' and I always kept thinking about Rhinoceros but it was like they fell off of the earth. It was great finding this site and bringing back the memories of all the Rolling Stone articles about the 'hyped supergroup'. It was pretty righteous having a white boy like Jon Finley actually give rock some much needed R&B reality (as much as I loved Electric Flag, Nick Gravenites was always straining to be a soulman) and Weis could sure enough jam!!!

This week I had an email from a friend, & contributor to the Toronto Blues Society Newsletter, who told me Jon, Lee and the Checkmates played there for the first time in years. Apparently Jon finley was in town from Los Angeles for some dental work, so the opportunity to treat those with long-standing memories of incredible music were amply entertained.

Sometimes these great R&B musicians & singers, who populated Toronto through the 60s & early 70s, seem to be left behind with time. It's good to know the fans remember and are glad to come out and see their favourites for old times sake.

Ruth even sent the set list, which was peppered with incredible favourites: 634-5790, Midnight Hour, Bring It Down Front, Raise Your Hand and many more! What a night of memories and great music provided by one of the seminal groups to grace the stages around town back then.
Wish I could have been there!

I am writing to announce the fact that I am about half way through finishing my very first solo album on Marshmellow Records in Toronto, Canada. Finally, a Danny Weis CD comes to pass, for real. The album should be released in January, 2005. I have the very best musicians in Canada playing on it. It is being recorded at a beautiful studio called Phase One Audio Group, one of Canada's finest recording facilities. Thanks to God for the opportunity to do this. Thanks to my wife Michele for her never-ending love and support. To all who have supported me on this site, thanks from my heart. It's all R and B/ Jazz with some extremely funky tracks as well. I will keep you posted as to progress on my CD. Michael Fonfara is on it too! I am hopeful to have John Finley on one of the tracks as well. I will be seeing him shortly.

I haven't been here in about a year or so and each time just overwelms me. I am fortunate to have been a part of this and thank Mike, Nick and everyone who takes the time and energy out of their lives to remember and rekindle. Hearing some of the comments reminds me of how precious those times were and , hell! Just dropped by to say hello to a couple of old friends..Jon Finlay and Pete Hodgson,whom I knew and performed in the same circuit as they did back in the good old " Toronto Sound Era " of the 60's,when they were Jon & Lee and the Checkmates..the best damn R&B band to ever come out of Toronto!!!

Jon Finlay was an inspiration to me ever since the early days when I first saw him perform at St Helen's dance hall in Toronto,and still is even today...and his cousin Pete Hodgson,whom I was fortunate enough to know through his sister Elaine and lived in the same neighborhood with..would sit in and jam with us in a dingy old basement on Fermanagh Ave,when we were first starting out..and I remember him teaching our " very green " bass player how to play Stand By Me..the only song we knew at that time!

Fortunately,with a few more jam sessions with Pete,and Jon's soulful performances as an inspiration to me..we learned a few more pieces,got better, and eventually ended up playing the same circuit,clubs and venues as Jon & Lee and the Checkmates and others who tried to eminate them...Mandala,Power,Shawn/Jay Jackson,The Associates etc. But none of us could ever match, or come close to matching, the " soulfulness" that was Jon and Lee and the Checkmates. They were undoubtably..Toronto's Kings of R&B and Soul..and will never be dethroned!

Thanks..Jon.Pete..and the rest of The Checkmates for being the inspiration and driving force behind me and all other Toronto bands back then..it has lasted a lifetime for all of us and has kept us performing all these years. We were at The Mardi Gras and Shuffle here in Toronto a little while ago where I ran into Fonfara again..plus George Olliver and Jay Jackson,and they all agree with me... You guys were number one,and nobody here in Toronto has forgotten that!

Hi, Great Website. I just found all 3 albums on CD, have been looking for them for years.

The first rock concert I attended was Rhinoceros.They opened for Blood, Sweat & Tears. I didn't see this show listed in the live dates section. My memory is not exact on the dates, but here's the info as I remember it.

It was either the fall of 1968 or the spring of 1969. It was an outdoor show at Drew University in Madison, NJ. Blood , Sweat, & Tears did not show up due to a David Clayton Thomas illness. All 7 members of the band played, it was the largest rock band
I had ever seen. Rhinoceros was so good that no one really missed BS&T. There was also another act at this show, I believe that it was
Chuck Berry.

I remember that it was several months before
I could find the 1st album in the record shops, so perhaps this was fall 1968.

Only on the internet! Wow! I had the pleasure of seeing you guys in concert in New York's Central Park, probably in 1968. I went to Sam Goody's and bought your first album the same week. You put on a helluva show, and my garage band tried to to do you justice, by playing a few of your tunes! great finding you after all these years, and I don't have to tell you, those were the best times...ever...period!!!

I really hope u read this i know of your time spent with iron butterfly...and i have a conspiracy theory...just a theory but if its true...tell me PLEASE!!! Ron Bushy is supposed to be the original drummer for Irojn butterfly...but i beg to differ and say that it is infact (Dan Rosten)or(Danny) it is my belief that he was involved in every song in in-da-gadda-di-vida.. and not ron bushy...i have read information in http://www.gaylasgarden.com/flowers.htm that clearly states ron bushy was a member of the band when the name for in da gadda di vida was created and he took part in the conversation of putting the song together and what it would be called. also here (http://www.apex.net.au/~bill/ironbutt.html) it clearly states that in 1968 3 band members left...being replaced with Erik Braunn and Lee Dorman. unfortunatley the third replacement was not mentioned...probably to further hide the leaving of Dan rosten...also here (http://www.esientertainment.com/1site/artists/Bios/IronButt2.html) It clearly states that Ron bushy was famous for HIS solo and that he is an original band member....I know Dan rosten and have pictures of him...my next goal is to line a picture up of the band in 1966 to 67/68 highlighting Dan rosten and reveal the true original drummer,Creator the the solo that rocked america, and rightful owner to all drum beats on the albulm titles In-Da_Gadda_di_vida(albumn).

I've been a friend of Lobby's for many years & went through Melbourne Uni with Danny Robinson. I rang Lobby to let him know about your letter & he told me you had been in contact. Lobby made mention of an album "Peculiar Hole In The Sky"... I think that's right ! He thought that the Martyrs might also be on the album with "Time Will Come". Alexandria Roller Rink, Nov 24th. Steve Miller and V Fudge were on the bill and the power kept going out. Great show despite the power outages. Played the first two albums to a vinyl pulp. Got to get the Second album on CD. Would love to ask Danny if he listened to Roy Buchanan back in those days.

We really should keep the non-Rhino stuff to a minimum, but to answer Jack's question -- yes, there was some talk of a Mainline tour with the Allman Brothers Band, but it never came to any sort of fruition. It couldn't have been Hourglass in any case, because their last lineup was in '68, at which point we had barely formed.

A little non Rhino if nobody minds...if I wasn't as familiar with MMM I might have confused the two Harrisons as welll...I must say I found it amusing as both are big favs of mine-however I would never confuse gravelly voiced Mike with the bottom end of MMM. Funny to see this post this week as The Last Puff and Mainline both hit my turntable in the last few days...

On the off chance you could answer this Mike,I saw in A & T Barris's book about Canadian music that Mainline was supposed to/might have been considered for a tour with the Allmans. I think he must have meant Hourglass,which included Duane and Gregg, who were also on Liberty?? or did he mean ABB?

I guess it really was 1969...The Fillmore was holding it's shows at the NY state pavillion @ The World's Fair. I was 14. Spooky tooth was AMAZING (the original band) and Steppenwolf was pretty good. I feel so fortunate to have seen Rhinoceros. Danny Weis' playing really got to me. A tele and (4!!) Bassmans.Talk about tone! I can still hear that. A really fine lineup overall, and really hard to top. I have very fond memories of those days, and Rhinoceros was so much a part. Hey, they were on the radio EVERY day! I must get a tele one of these days. Thank you very much boys. You gave the world classy rockin' music to groove with.

I find it very heartwarming to encounter this website! As bassist with Grant Smith and the Power, and then Mainline (circa 1966-73), I remember well the Devil's Den (the hipper-than-hip after-hours venue in the basement of the Avenue Road Club) where I cut my R&B teeth under the wry but benevolent tutelage of Peter Hodgson. The Checkmates had been the Den's house band, rushing from in-town gigs to assuage the musical needs of Toronto's late-night hipsters. We (Grant Smith and The Power) were graced with the distinction of becoming the de facto house band at the Den when the Checkmates headed to New York.

Over the years, the denizens of the Checkmates and Rhinoceros and Blackstone cadre have remained beloved compatriots with the participants and heirs of the Power and Mainline legacy. Larry Leishman, for example, joined us (Mainline) on our 1973 Australian tour, becoming (God help him!) the first and only muso to add his licks to the original four McKenna-sans.

I last encountered Danny Weis at the Abbey Road Pub in 1973; Michael Fonfara at the Silver Dollar in 1993, and Peter at Blues on Bellair in 2002. Speaking both as a fan and as a colleague, I am happy to express my appreciation of a wonderful website, and my virual grinning face at the happy memories it recalls!

I always enjoyed the 1st Rhino LP a lot, and saw the band live around 1971 in Ithaca, NY -- I thinks it was in Cornell college fieldhouse, as part of a benefit for a Vietnam protester, the priest Daniel Berrigan. It was a great show except for the drummer may have had a bit too much to dream that day... anyway some nice memories.

Outstanding release of the "Collectors' Choice" new CD with "Satin Chickens" and "Better Times are Coming." My vinyl collection needed an update from years of listening. I was 15 when "Satin Chickens" hit my record store in Western New York. I already owned their first album and was probably one of a dozen people in the area who ever heard of the band. The music from that LP is fresh and timeless. What an outstanding group of musicians. I am fortunate to be part of that era! Rock on......

I just want to say that I think this was one of the greatest bands that ever exisited. I've been telling people about them for years though many had no idea who I was talking about. It was a very sad moment, for me, when I heard they broke up.
I have all the (vinyl) albums, but they had been worn thin. I couldn't believe it when I discovered that the had been re-issued on CD. I have the 1st (which is still my favorite) and I intend to get the 2nd & 3rd combination disc when I get a few $s.
Well enough of my love for this band. ?he real reason I'm "writting" to you is, I've been having quite a bit of trouble openinmg a few links on your site. Is it my computer or the links? If you do answer these e-mails, please answer mine. Because as fanatical as I may appear, the more I know about Rhinoceros the more pleasure I'll get from their FUNtastic music.

Hi again, It's me, Danny Weis. the guitarist mentioned here in this site. I occasionally come here and leave a post. First off, I want to thank Nick Warburton for the wonderful work he has done on this site. This site is extremely accurate and that is so refreshing for musicians like me to see. Often, in the music business, we as musicians get things written about ourselves that are quite wrong if not downright embarassing. Hats off to you Rick, and another thanks my friend. I also want to thank all of you who have either left a post about me here or written me directly. They all mean something to me. Now, I want to just let you all know that I have not fallen off the planet. I am still quite active playing my guitar in this crazy business. Currently I am still at work recording first solo CD which will, hopefully, be released soon. I said that in an earlier post but it had to be postponed as my music schedule simply got too full to finish it. The style of music it captures is definitely R&B. I mean real R&B, not what has happened to it. Funky stuff. I still will throw in the odd chicken. Recently I have been working on numeorus CD's for others, some TV, a few movies, and various concerts, mostly in the Los Angeles area. Lately, I have been doing some work in the Toronto, Ontario area of Canada with, yes, Michael Fonfara. I encourage any of you to write me at either of the 2 email addresses above. I grew up on the first Rhinoceros LP. I've been searching for this on CD for almost 20 years. I stumbled on it at the Virgin Megastore in Time Sq NYC. It's every bit as awesome as I remember it. And now that I've been a guitar player for nearly 40 yrs, I can REALLY appreciate the playing - especially the interplay. It's a shame about the biz and the politics and the ego stuff, 'cause the music was 'there'.

After NY, I went to LA, and saw an old guitar pal. I said the trip was already a success from having found this 'gem' from my past. Did he remember Rhinoceros, I asked? He walked me up to his Wurlitzer Jukebox, punched 2 keys, and APRICOT BRANDY started blasting out! You guys are still everywhere. I do a weekly jam at a London pub now, and we will cover at least one Rhinceros tune soon!

I have a small personal connection with 2 of you - Alan and John spent Thanksgiving in NY at Aunt Liliane's - I was there with my family, and the story still comes up whenever there's good rock'n'roll around November-time...Thanks for some great music - BG

Back in November of 1968 I had the opportunity to see Rhinoceros in Philadelphia, at the Kaleidoscope (in the Manayunk section) opening for Blood Sweat and Tears.
(who had just begun touring with David Clayton Thomas)
I noticed that this date was missing from your archive of live performances.
Anyway the band was very funky and tight as tight could be. Danny Weis was one of the most exciting and tasteful musicians I have ever seen. His style just knocked me out, and the interplay with Doug Hastings was a treat. The rest of the band was stellar, and being a drummer, I paid particular attention to Billy Mundi. I was familiar with his work in The Mothers of Invention, pre-Rhinoceros. Although he appeared rather stoic, his precision and effortless style provided the band's pulse.
Having read the Rhinoceros story, one can only be left to wonder of what might have been for a group bursting with talent, but constricted by corporate pressure.
That said, how that wonderful interpretation of Satin Doll made it to press (let alone as the leadoff song for Satin Chickens) is testament to the limits Rhinoceros may have crossed in grand style.

I was a roady with NYRRE during this time(68-69) and caught Rhino at most of their shows in the metro area- Wore out the vinyl-and could never figure out why they were not released on CD- Awsome ( as my grandson would say) Apricot Brandy was also used in the Raceway Park radio ads for years!! I'm writing this for my friend Robert Quine who along with Danny Weis played alongside Lou Reed. Robert always told Lou that Danny was the best guitarist he ever heard play with Lou. I think Quine and Danny could make a great record together as they both have very distictive styles. BTW, have any of y'all heard the Tom principato rendition of "Apricot Brandy" on his September 2003 release "House On Fire"? I swore it was Danny Weis' playing when I heard it on WBGO. I was a short-term "roadie" for the boys back in the late-60's. Steve's wife Cathie and I attended Mercer Island High together, and she was pals with Candy Brown from Bellevue High, who shared a house with "Sean", Mike Russian & Patty, on Roosevelt Way in the Seattle "U" District. A lot of the guys from the West Coast Natural Gas hung out there, and Steve and Cathie came by occasionally too. I recall running into Mike and Danny in '71 while I was staying at the Tropicana while playing with the Great White Cane with Rick James. Ended up sitting in on a session for the Everly Bros that they were doing with Rothchild. Something about a Three-armed Poker Playing River Rat From New Orleans.
Saw them at the Rock Pile in T.O. in '69. One of the great live bands of all time. Was nice to see fellow Torontonians playing in such a high profile venue.

I used to go school with Peter Hodgson (Parkdale Collegiate in Toronto) back in 1963. I had always heard that some of the members had formed Rhinoceros but not confirm it. The first Rhinoceros album I heard was "Better Times Are Coming" (hereafter BTAC) which I found in a used record store. I knew from the first listen it would become one of my favorite albums. And it did. I long fumed at the length of time it took for this band to make it onto disc. Well, no more! Good old CCM to the rescue. They are one of the essential reissue labels. A truly overlooked body of work, at last preserved for a few more years in the pits of digital. (?)

I was "show director" for the Electric Circus in Toronto, and was at both the opening in Toronto and the re-opening in NYC.
(that meant I was the strongest mule on the team).

Rhino stands out in my mind as one of the better bands to play in Toronto & there were plenty;
I recall they were up from Woodstock, and great dudes to work with.

That Telecater chicken scratch was outrageous.
And Billy Mundi had awesome technique.

I was definitely there the night Zappa was there, but I was too busy keeping all the shit working to kick back. I remember Zappa coming into the sound booth with Stan Friedman, and we were all hoping they wouldn't knock a projector over or disconnect a wire!
It was dark and strobes were flashing, and the place was packed with gear.

The guys in the band won't remember me or my wife Lee who sits across the room as I write this email.

I love this band. The first two albums contain some of the most soulful vocals to have ever come out of caucasian pipes. The last is a bit of a let-down, perhaps because they were too consciously trying to do a Buddy Miles kind of thing and had lost key members. Nevertheless, Albums 1 and 2 are the "nazz." I see a recent email from bassist Jerry Penrod, the original Atomic Rooster (never sure if that interesting story was true or not) but may be you could arrange an interview with Jerry for another angle and any memories and anecdotes from that great period?

The music is as strong now as it ever was, especially IMHO the first album but alas time doesn't stand still and I'm not convinced that some other fan's idea of getting some of the original band back together would be a good thing artistically, even it was logistically possible.

I think I'd prefer to remember the original buzz we got from the recorded music (never lucky enough to see them live in the UK). May be another Paul A. Rothchild should commission a 'hot' tribute band to tour ....anyone have any suggestions for substitute players? I think Danny Weis and John Finlay would be especially hard guys to replace from that period. Surely the band would have to be called Satin Chickens!

Well i just picked up the reissue of the first
Rhinoceros album and I'm looking forward to getting the next two. My favourite band from the 60's and I never thought I would be listening to this stuff again with such clarity. I've still got several copies of the records from the 60's that I wore out! I grew up in the Toronto area and somewhow Rhinoceros seemed to distill the essence of some great, unique music that was around in that area for a period. So I remember Jon & lee and the Checkmates too (I think they recorded too and would love to get a copy of that material - is it available?).
Wasn't there a documentary on the CBC where Jon and his family appeared - I seem to remember that but maybe I'm wrong. I also remember spending many hours trying to get as funky as Danny Weiss on guitar - well I never attained that level but I still play and love his playing. Hopefully there will be some more recorded material from him soon. I'm glad Rhinoceros is in a sense still
alive as it was a great moment in music and deserves to be preseerved so that others
who weren't so fortunate can enjoy it too.

Once you could make your own CD's, one of the first I made was all 3 Rhino albums (yep got all 3, two of the first one due to wear)! I listen to this CD for years and periodically looked on the web for news of Rhino and especially Danny who in my opinion brought chickin' pickin' to the masses (he may not have invented it but IMHO he certainly popularized it). I mean I saw Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton both "steal" his signature riffs within a year of seeing the band for the first time. I got to see them a whole bunch of time in good old NYC including some great late night jamming at Steve Paul's (thanks Danny for taking the time to talk to me about your unique guitar set up, still remember that moment in time). A great band that still sounds good today. They understood the word "funky" before it was even a word! Great site - thanks for the site, thanks for the memories and the great interviews and information.

Great Site. I saw Rhinoceros at University of Hartford April 19, 1969 - I still remember the drum kit walking forward on the first of many powerful whacks!! A great show.

Danny Weiss is one of my inspirations on guitar. Best chicken picking I have ever heard.

Now I'm happy, finally get to hear John Finley again - what a treat! I was booking acts out of Detroit for D.M.A. when I first got a taste for rhinoceros. And what a taste it was. If you guys remember, I booked a couple of dates at the old Wonderland Gardens in London. I was under a lot of pressure to book the Detroit acts, but my heart was still in Toronto. I had lived in the village and was a regular at the John and Lee and the Checkmates shows. They were fabulous. I never thought of any competition between the bands that made up the Toronto sound back then . But, I can tell you those Checkmate shows left you emotionally exhausted. That will always be one of the highlights of my life. John, if you're out there - HI - I see Michael Fonfara with Downchild in Florida (where I live six months a year) and we always get around to talking about you. You are a great inspiration and I need to hear as much of your music as possible. Oh yea, I did pick up "Saved" and you're sounding as soulful as ever. Just visiting, as I do periodically, to catch up on news of one of the all time greatest bands. Cool John Finley interview! I revisit (in my mind) the August, 1969 Pavillion show at Flushing Meadows on occasion, and remember the tremendous, lasting impression that they left with me, and many others. John is right on the money about the impact on the audience, as the memories are still vivid in my mind. They literally blew everyone else off the stage, no easy feat...they were just more entertaining. This was in the days before inept soundmen, with subwoffers to play with, mixed the kick drum louder than the bass, and almost everything else! That Pavillion show is how I remember great music sounding. John says in the interview that the band was inconsistent live. I know from experience, that they probably sounded great even on the gigs they felt weren't quite up to par. I wish I would have seen them more back then. A reunion of the band would be truly amazing, and I'll bet they would play their asses off! I just hope the gigs are close enough for me to attend! I love the site, and to the members of Rhinocerous that may be reading this, I love you guys, and thanks for the influence on my lifelong love of playing bass...your contribution to music, in my opinion, is immeasurable.

I ordered the cd and when it came to the house I put it on the stereo immediately.It sounded as great as it did in 1969 . I took that album to every party I went to . Hi again, it's me, DANNY WEIS. I thought I would check in and say thank you to all who have posted the very kind comments about my playing. Rhinoceros brings back so many fond memories. I will attempt to get back to recording my first solo CD as soon as I can. I had a recent personal tragedy and it is taking a while for me to bounce back. Thanks to God Almighty, I will make it.

I am still working in the music industry and playing around the Los Angeles area. My recent guitar addition, well actually for the last 3 years, is my Tom Anderson Hollow T. What a truly amazing instrument it is. To any guitarists: if you haven't tried one, do it! There are not a lot of them around though and they are usually ordered. I believe they make the finest electric guitars in the world. If you go to my interview on this site, it's the one I am playing in the first picture and the very last one.

I have been approached recently by "someone related to Rhinoceros" about putting the band back together. Sounds like a "Blues Brothers" movie huh? Well, one never knows. It was great to read Alan Gerber's recent interview. Ahh, what fond memories. We stay in touch with one another. I also stay in touch with Michael Fonfara, John Finley, and, occasionally, Billi Mundi and Peter Hodgeson. John is local for me, so he was singing with one of my bands and still sings his ass off. He is one of the finest singers on the planet. I would love to hear from Jerry so, Jerry, if you read this, email me!

Well, I wanted to let you all know that I didn't disappear. My last post talked about my upcoming CD and then, it would appear that nothing happened. Soon, I will be back to finishing it. YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!! Yesterday as I was digging through an old box of cassettes in the garage I came across a little cartridge of gold... A TDK cassette with the name "Rhinoceros" written in faded black marker on it!!! This cassette was bounced back and forth between all of my close friends at one time, and I was sure that I would never hear it again!! This tape was so well loved that it must of been spliced after being eaten in the cassette player in my car at least 50 times. Well, I am sooooo glad that there are other fanz out there. Would really like to get a cleaner copy of "BETTER TIMES ARE COMING" , perhaps on MP3, after all this cassette has been through I really cant CRANK IT LIKE I WANT TO. additionally, and i'm not proud of this, I made this cassette by holding a boom box up to the speakers of my phonograph!! It's so great to be able to get Rhinoceros on CD. I've been searching Morpheus, Napster, KaZaa and all the rest looking for this but only have been able to download Apricot Brandy. It's heaven to listen to "You're My Girl" again. I saw Rhinoceros at The Boston Pop Festival ('68.....'69?) with The Chambers Brothers, Mountain, God, I can't even remember who else because all I wanted to see was Rhinoceros! And when they played "Apricot Brandy" I jumped on the stage and was never thrown off (I don't think so, anyway) the psychedelics were kicking in! God...if there ever was a chance for a reunion........

Man this is just too cool. I stumble across the CD and then this website. the 60's were the best. To be a teenager in the 60's was the best! the best music ever...just magic. I still remember the joy of listeneing to Quicksilver, Love, Buffalo Springfield and then Neil Young, the 1st Steve Miller albums, Moby Grape. I gotta stop!! Incredible music - but none better than Rhinoceros. I loved the guitar work in Iron Butterfly's 'Heavy', but Danny's playing on Rhinoceros was even more impressive. Who did not know every note on 'Apricot Brandy"? Joe Walsh with the James Gang amd DW with Rhinoceros were the inventors of rock-funk. An amazing album to this day. And now we have it on CD! And a too cool website with the too cool artwork. Somebody pinch me. Does Al Kooper know about this?!?!?!?

i first heard Rhinoceros on L.A. FM underground radio. I believe Apricot Brandy got quite a bit of airplay. Loved them instantly. Also bought the Iron Butterfly's Heavy album, which had some great fuzztone guitar on a song called Unconscious Power. Naturally, I was crushed when I went to see them at the Hollywood Bowl, (after Danny left) and they pretty much sucked. REALLY GLAD THE FIRST RHINO ALBUM HAS BEEEN RE-ISSUED ON DISC

Until a friend recently informed me that Rhinoceros' first album was out on CD, they were a group that was fading from my 1960's memory. What memories these guys bring back. I think the band I was in did at least half the songs from that album, and I'd bet that most of the people that danced to those songs still don't know about Rhinoceros. That's okay though. I was bugging Collector's Choice for over a year to release the 1st LP. I've always like it. I'm glad they released it and I brought two copies. I grew up in Carmel, NY which is next to Mahopac and I knew back then the band was living there. I even saw them at Mahopac H.S. I think one of the members settled in near by Brewster, N.Y. for a while. Well, if I helped get this CD released I glad. I think the band really had something for a little while with a lot of class. I really enjoyed learning about the history about Rhinoceros. My Brother-in-law is Jerry Penrod aka BEAR. He has shared some stories from his days with Iron Butterfly and Rhinoceros, but this was real interesting to learn more about his time in the group. I happy to say Bear is doing well and enjoying being a Grandpa to Cody, Renisha, Damon aka Scooby-doo, Evan and his Nephew Chase Kemp. The same love he put into his music he puts into FAMILY. I used to go and see Jon & Lee and The Checkmates in the 60's when I was learning guitar, as they frequently played The Muskokas in the summer. Never did see Rhinoceros, but did have the albums ... long since gone! Last night (Apr 27/02) Michael Fonfara was playing with Lance Anderson and Mike Sloski at the Orillia (Ont) Blues Festival. This was the first time I had seen Michael since the mid 60's, and what a nice player he is! He told me about the rhinoceros web site, and I was thrilled to find out about it. I can finally hear again some of those old tunes that I knew so well. Great site all around ... brings back a lot of memories from "the good old days".

Well, I'm visiting the site once again, glad to see new fans out there! I recently had the pleasure of speaking to Danny Weis! He's one of the all time great guitarists, a terrific guy, and a continuing inspiration to musicians like myself. Rhinoceros was and continues to be a very strong influence on me, I listen to the albums frequently. It is truly a testament to the greatness of this band, that after 34 years, the music never sounds dated. Even with all the modern recording technology of today, I rarely hear any music from bands now that have the soul, fire, technical ability or sheer musicality that Rhinoceros had. In addition, if you were lucky enough to have caught them live, you know that as good as the records are, they were far superior in concert. The experience of their live performances showed me the real difference between musicians, and musicians that could entertain! Maybe the people that have the masters will release the cd's someday, until then, we'll have our limited supply of downloaded tracks, and old, cherished vynil. Rhinoceros was the best!

What a memory thinking back to that first album. Although the days were filled the lingering effects of the nights before them, some things were never forgotten from the 60's. That first album was one of them. I've gone though many copies of it over the years and my current is older than most people in my neighborhood. Ahhh - to only have a nice timeless CD of it. The album cover itself was one many things that adorned the walls of what we referred to as "The Room". A nice little back room in my parents house that we explored the land of mind altering states. Rhinoceros always travelled with us... You've presented a great site to us old fans! Great job. Answered a lot of questions for me.

a few memories. stumbling on to the iron butterfly playing at Bido Lido's in hollywood, playing 'play with fire'. weis on mosrite and echoplex, ib theme etc. chilling! seeing rhino at aquarius theater and whiskey. truly powerfull as a rhino. to all weis freaks, get first ib album 'heavy'. forget the rest. drivel. then in 1993? my friend roban says i think weis is in this band funk attack, let's go i said . a little club on lankershim. i expected to see weis with a small entourage about him. then i realized that was him sitting on the floor near the stage stringing his guitar. tee-shirt and cheap tennis shoes. alas the guitar genuis is fashion challenged. but boy, did he lay down some funk with some stank on it. just guitar,bass drums,horn and vocals. the man has soul! and so does finley. still have all the vinyl, nary a scratch. will we be able to say the same for cds in 30 years? old is good. so glad to see interest in one of the best bands i ever saw. looking forward to danny's new cd. craig in vegas.

Here is a follow up on my persistent emails for Dr. Rhino at Rhino Records to release the Rhinoceros albums on CD. It's not pretty...it was a cut and dry type response thanking me for my request but that they have no plans to release anything. I say let's send them an email request everyday, then twice a day, then every hour...well you get the point. What is it going to take to make Rhino(you'd think they would love to release albums by RHINOceros)see that there are old and new fans of this group that would buy these cds? Don't give up!!! gb

I have been searching the net for any Information on this very underated and overlooked band. I have the first 3 Rhinoceros albums and they are nearly worn out. When are they gonna' release these on CD ? At least release the first two. I am so glad to see that so many others share my love for this great band. Alas, my vinyle is gone and I 've ben looking for this stuff for some time. I hope , (with everyones and help and insistance) all three albums will be on CD , in the not distant future ( with origianl art work , liner notes , etc) . Really does bring back a by gone era. Gone but not forgotten. The music , however, does stand up to the test of time. It's not just nostalgia , but good tunes, good playing and a great sound.

I love seeing all of the positive feedback on Rhinocerus. I have been looking for a site for this group for sometime and you guys have done an amazing job. I still have all three original albums on vinyl and am lucky they are still in decent shape to listen too. Rhinoceros are one of the best groups ever and their music still holds up strong today and would sell to a whole new generation of fans if they ever put them out on CD. I have sent numerous emails to Dr.Rhino requesting the CD releases but have gotten no reponses. (everyone...don't be afraid to send those emails...send one a day until they release em)I reminded them that many of the big name MP3 sites constantly have/had Rhinoceros tracks downloaded because they can't be purchased on CD. I have all of the tracks from the first two albums and a couple of tracks from the third but would love to BUY them on CD. I will let ya'll know what if anything that I hear back from Dr. Rhino. Thanks for keeping one of the best groups of all time alive!!! gb

Thanks for the great site, and thanks to the guys for all of the audio memories for 30+ years. I found the first Rhinoceros album while living in central IL and drumming while going to college. Thought it was one of the best 'finds' since gold in CA. Billi is the drummer's drummer, and one of the most stylistic of all. I really tried to integrate many of the great back-beat/counter-rythms into my style and still love hearing him. I have always put this album up with Quicksilver and a few others as the very best first albums.

Well I'll be dipped ! Rhinoceros on the 'net.. first album still goes with me to " stranded on a desert island with..." Saw in Boston , late 60's with The Guess Who.. How true what others say - CD release would be increased revenues for the " bottom line" people -just think of all the younger musicians and fans that would be interested in, and purchasing !!!! hel - loooow ! I have found copies ( vinyl albums ) in very good condition at record collector shows - they are out there - amazing how listening to the " old stuff", Rhinoceros included, can transport one back in time..

Saw the band at Central Park, NYC with The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Fillmore East.......I'm an old Hammond organist who admired Felix Cavaliere, Mark Stein, Brian Auger......Mike Fonfara I learned a lot from. Loved how the rhythm section drove the band like a locomotive....great guitar & Hammond work......'Apricot Brandy' one of the ten greatest rock instrumentals ever recorded....I sent Rhino my request for release of the CDs.....lets hope they listen to all of us & feel it'll be profitable for them(it's all about the money isn't it?) Does anyone know if "Yer Album" by Alan Gerber was ever released on CD? I worked on this album with Alan at Electric Lady Studios back in the day and being a Rhinoceros fan, I was surprised when he included a remake of " Along Comes Tomorrow" on his debut solo album! Wow! A Rhinoceros website. I AM NOT WORTHY! Saw you guys for free in Central Park a Million years ago, my current band "Back To The FIllmore" still jams with Apricot Brandy and we've ben doing "When You Say You're Sorry" for years! WHERE THE HELL ARE THE CD'S! My friends and I have downloaded all the tracks from the first album from Napster or somewhere months ago and have burned our own CD's that we gave to each other but WE WANT THE REAL THING,with out takes and Live stuff. Just came in from the Downchild Blues Band website. Michael Fonfara is their keyboardist. Fell in love with this monster of a band the first time I heard Apricot Brandy on KIMN in Denver. I've still got all three of their albums, and they are even listenable. Amazing how good old vinyl still sounds better than the cold sterile CD, but that's an argument for the Stereophile site. This is the band that made me search out Duke Ellington after hearing Satin Doll on the second album. Just for that, I'm eternally in their debt. I encourage all of you to go to the Rhino Records web site and plea for the release of this band's music!

I grew up on both Jon & Lee and the Checkmates and Rhinoceros. I had the good fortune to be in LA when the Rhinoceros project was coming together and it was a tremendous experience. I've stayed in touch loosely with most of the Checkmates, except Lee, and continue to think that John Finley is one the finest singers I've heard ever. I'd adored the Checkmates and there's a wonderful CD floating around featuring Murray Campbell of the Avenue Road Club on it. I recently discovered miny viyl copies of Rhincoeros first album so I'm happy. Great site taking me back to the days when I first starting writing and covring the Toronto scene. Looking for help -- In a long ago time my friend had the Satin Chicken album (although at the time we didn't know if that or Rhinoceros was the band name). We marvelled at the sounds within, and almost as much at the Rhinoceros typeface graphic. Well, the album got all used up and was sorely missed, but years later something strange happened. He came into possession of a piece of clothing, a t-shirt if I remember, and beside the washing instructions and size description, the label carried that same graphic. Unbelievable! He was unable to track down the company (seems the distributor had gone out of biz), but it still floats in his mind to this day. I heard Rhinoceros live at the Boston Tea Party at least twice, probably in late 1969. They were so expressive, soulful, and truly funky. They had great singing, good tunes, and wonderful guitar work. Their unique Poor-Boy Soul sound was a good antidote to all the Blue Cheer-type heaviness on the scene. A year or two later I caught them in a nearly empty Providence, R.I. Bar near India Point. I had taken all my band-mates. We were blown AWAY. They really rocked!!! This band needs to be heard again.

One of the absolute best rock concerts I've ever witnessed, was at The Pavillion, Flushing meadows, on the site of the '64-'65 New York Worlds' fair. It was August 1st. or 2nd., 1969, and the bill was my then favorite band, Steppenwolf, with Spooky Tooth, and Rhinocerous. Spooky Tooth went on first, and played great! Then, WOW! Rhinoceros went on, I'll never forget the first song, and the power of that band! It was "I Need Love" and had some great chord changes. I noticed that right away, being a young bassist. I have never seen a frontman as good with an audience that show as John Finley, and I've seen a lot of them! The set was great, and it ended withn Billy Mundi knocking over both of his cymbal stands! Unfortunately, Steppenwolf had a nightmare of a gig. Goldy McJohn, the organist, was sick, and didn't play, and then, Nick St. Nicholas blew up the Rickenbacker bass amplifier he was using, and had to borrow one of the Fender Dual Showmans from Rhinoceros! The next day, I went to the Alexander's department store in Queens, and bought the first Rhinoceros album. I learned every song on that album, and played it until it was played out. I then bought another copy, a few years later, at a record store that had some old stock. I also bought "Satin Chickens" at that time. I can't wait to get the CD's when they become available, I only have the first two albums, I love Satin Chickens, and I think that it is more representative of what I remember the band sounding like live, especially the sound of Mike Fonfara's Hammond. I saw the band one other time, at the 1970 Randalls' Island concert in New York City, the band had different personnel, Edwards on drums, sounded great, but not quite the same band. I'll never forget that concert at the Pavillion, and how much great music Rhinoceros made in a relatively short time. PLEASE RELEASE THE CD'S!!!!

Great job on the site! I *loved* Rhinoceros from start to (premature) finish. I am an organist, and Michael Fonfara is one of my idols! I dig the original lineup - it had its unique flavor - as well as the Duke Edwards reinvention with its spirit, soul, bottom throbbing beneath the filigrees and subtleties of Larry and Danny, in turn encouraged and sometimes pushed on by Michael's chords and chops. I personally know a *lot* of folks who would run, swim, fly, crawl to purchase a well-mastered Rhinoceros box set (mayhap including some well-chosen Blackstone/Jon&Lee tracks) KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK ON THIS SITE!!!

July 27, 2001 Would like to answer the question posed that someone must know where the artist/illustrator Gene Szafran is and what happened to him. Unfortunately, Gene was diagnosed with Multiple Schlerosis in his mid-thirties when he was at the peak of his career. The original of the art work probably was bought along with the publishing rights by the Record Company. There are a few color posters still in existence. The original piece of art was a collage/assemblage of beads, ink and I believe it was in a wooden frame which was then 'shot' for the cover. I saw Rhinoceros, live, in August, 1969 at the Asbury Park Convention Hall, Asbury Park, NJ. They were opening for Vanilla Fudge. It was V.F.'s Farewell Tour and Rhinoceros was awesome! Thunderously loud and clear. Billy Mundi was/is a drummers drummer! I had the privlege of meeting him in 1970 as he ascorted a fellow classmate of mine to our Senior Prom. Yes, Billy Mundi was at MY Senior Prom! What a hoot!!! I own all three (original, still in shrink-wrap, Rhinoceros LPs. Of course they have been played!) I couldn't stop playing them the first time I saw them. Rhinoceros 'live' is a memory I will carry with me forever! I have contacted Rhino-Records, repeatedly, through-out the years. I do NOT know who is holding these CD's back but, I am only one person and I cannot storm the walls of Rhino Records myself. With the help of fellow 'Rhinoceri'(?) maybe, just MAYBE, we can get through to those folks and release three fabulous LP's on CD. Hell, if I can down-load them, they would make more money producing the CDs and selling them out-right! What a concept! Rhino Records selling 'Rhinoceros' CDs! The mind boggles!!

I remember Big G Walters playing Apricot Brandy before the top-of-the-hour newscast. The song got stuck in my head and I had to go out and find the record at Sam The Record Man on Yonge Street for two dollars and ninety nine cents. I had about five albums at the time so I now have that first Rhinoceros album tattooed in my brain. Satin Chickens has some great stuff on it too, particularily Monkee Man and Funk Butt. The third one wasn't quite as good but it had its moments and is certainly worth having. I still have all three and they are in my semi-regular rotation. I even burned them to disc for my own amusement. This is a great site...especially the Blackstone cut....very cool.

Well here's to all concerned. I'm an old friend of Michael Fonfara's from when we were teenager's in Toronto Canada. I saw Rhino in concert numerous times and they were beyond a doubt excellent. You know it's really too bad that WEA records has the master tapes and that for some reason won't release them so Rhinoceros's music can be heard on cd's. It all seems kind of selfish to me. I really believe that they would sell a lot of cd's so WEA release the tapes and have a little faith, there are a lot of people out here who will certainly buy them and you will be smiling all the way to the bank.

I also really appreciated the new pic of the band on stage, that Billy Mundi sent in. Fans will want to note that the new album by Willie "Big Eyes" Smith album features Michael Fonfara. It's called "Blues From The Heart" and, it's great Chicago blues. Willie was Muddy Waters' drummist for 14 years. Michael Fonfara plays piano throughout and, helped with the writing on a couple of tunes. Long on my CD wish list, other than the odd anthology cut, I haven't heard the first album since I put the stereo in the attic. It's really encouraging (and appropriate) that Rhino has the rights. It will be released. When? The site is great. I saw them a couple of times at the Fillmore East ('69 with Canned Heat and '70 with Procol Harum). My favorite show had to be the Schaefer Music Festival in NYC with Crazy World of Arthur Brown ('69?). That is one strange double bill. They also played the odd prom and dance in CT where i grew up. Their no-nonsense approach, superior musicianship and blue-eyed soul placed them somewhere between the Band and the Rascals in my mind and that ain't a bad place to be. Why is the Rhinoceros song called "You're my Girl" while it's "I Don't Want to Discuss It" when Delaney and Bonnie did it ( a great version)? Danny Gatton's "Apricot Brandy" is killer, too.

Rhinceros was the 2nd "rock" concert I ever went to see.. IT was a bill of Spooky Tooth Rhinceros and Steppenwolf.. The show was at the Worlds Fair Grounds in new York City (this was after the fair was long and one of the buildings was uesd for concerts during the summer.. Ill never forget that show!!!!!! All 3 groups put on a great show!!!! and I became a big fan of Rhinceros for years... Always looked for any info or recordings for their albums on cd... I, like obviously hundreds of other fans, were left with the feeling that it was like beating your head against a wall, when it came to trying to find music by this fabulous band....I have spend endless hours trying to locate anything by this band, and it wasn't until recently, that I was in the Timelife web sight, that i noticed a cd for sale called: Lost hits of the 60's, and one of the songs was, Apricot Brandy, one of my favourites...Then I found this page, and wow, it's nice to know I,m not alone....Any help finding music(cd or tape), from someone out there would be very helpful.....Brian

Now there are at least three UK entries! In 1968 when I was 14 the first album appeared. I remember initially being drawn to the cover, and yes I admit it, buying before I'd ever heard a note! I was not to be disappointed. After buying the next two albums, I continue to be hooked to this day. Soulful, moving, shiver down the spine stuff. I wonder how many members of the band really believe that this stuff is still being played in peoples cars and homes 30 years on !. I remember the late great Frank Zappa saying in an interview, "Who remembers Rhinoceros ?" Well me for one, and a lot of my peer group also. Let's just hope we can get a release on CD. Toronto was the place to be, in Canada, during the 60's. As someone who grew up with John Lee & the Checkmates (some of whom joined Rhinoceros)and so many other excellent bands out of Toronto at the time, we got to see the best entertainment as House Bands in the local Hotels and Clubs. I wouldn't trade the memories of seeing these guys and so many others for anything! Nice to see a website carrying the memory forward 30 years on!

Rhinoceros is one of the sadly overlooked bands of the 60's. Particularly, the first two albums. John Finley was an absolute killer vocalist. Two of the funkiest guitarist around at the time. I own several copies of each album and still buy sealed copies when I find them. Any chance of CDs??

I just want to say that I am so happy that there is even anything on the computer re. RHINOCEROS, I am totally thrilled, I was, and am still a big fan of theirs, I was young then, and had all of their albums, and went to every concert I was able to go to, I had a fire in my home years ago, and all their photos got , well, . I no longer have them, and I no longer have any of their photos, I am so glad that I have found a way to express that, well, they were loved a great deal, and they were very very unique, and so was their music, I had the chance to meet them and get to know them, and that will always be a very fond part of my past, I truly hope that it will be easier to get their old albums, and I hope their music will be on c.d. , if anyone has any photos of them, or anything, please, please, e mail me, thanks, peace

It was amazing coming across this website, via one through Iron Butterfly. I have had the first 2 LPs, Rhinoceros & Satin Chickens, since they were released. I saw them during my first semester in college, sometime in the Fall of 1969 at Wagner College in Staten Island, NY. I can't remember too much about the show, other than it was held in the gymnasium(great acoustics no doubt) and they were amazing. So when will Elektra or Rhino or somebody release at least the 1st lp on CD? H.P.Lovecraft, Beacon Street Union, the Remains, even Eden's Children have made it onto compact disc. So let's get with the program! Someone? Anyways, This is a great site with a lot of information in one place on one of the lost bands of the late 60's. I'm starting to listen to the tracks now, and man, it's awesome listening to a non scratchy version.

I own all three rhino albums. THE first is a masterpiece. I saw the band give a free concert in Central park back in the late sixties. Might have been 1969. Though not a big fan of the second and third albums, I believe the first album belongs on CD - remastered. It's one of my favorite rock albums of all time.

I first saw Jon and Lee and The Checkmates in 1965 at the old Eaton�s department store in downtown Toronto, where they were performing for the store�s Salute to Youth Week during Easter school break. I was 14 and I�d never heard rhythm and blues before. I thought the music, and their performance, was amazing. I also thought the guys were pretty amazing, too � seeing the band had helped to kick-start my hormones. I felt as if I�d been hit by a tree!

I came back to the store several times that week to see the band, and I met three other girls, Judy, Janet and Verna, who also liked the band.

That summer, my new friends and I started going to dances to hear The Checkmates. We discovered that they rehearsed at the Avenue Road Club in Toronto�s Yorkville Village, a bohemian area that was soon to become the local hippie village. My girlfriends and I started hanging out there, in the parking lot behind the club and the restaurant next door, hoping to catch a glimpse of them. We did see the guys often, but our conversations were usually limited to hardly more than "hi, how are you." Their obvious lack of interest in us, however, didn�t bother any of us as the guys were always polite and smiling. So we continued in our pursuit of The Checkmates.

Throughout the next school year (1965-66), our obsession with The Checkmates continued as we followed the band around to wherever they played in Toronto � under-21 clubs (the Hawk�s Nest, the Gogue Inn, the Club 888 among others), high schools and sports arenas. They did songs by Otis Redding, the Temptations, Sam and Dave, Eddie Floyd, Rufas Thomas and Wilson Picket, and performed wearing matching, bright, blue satin suits. Later on, the guys got bright, green satin suits, which we liked a lot. The high point of The Checkmate show was Jon�s electrifying, sweat-soaked version of James Brown�s "Please, Please, Please." I stopped doing homework and my school grades took a nosedive, but I had never had so much fun in my life before.

The next school year (1966-67) found my friends and I still going to see the Checkmates as often as we could and hanging out in front of Charlie Brown�s coffee house, the band�s new rehearsal spot, after school. But persistence finally paid off, and we were invited in to hear them rehearse a couple of times.

During one of those thrilling, intense times in Charlie Brown�s, Duke Edwards was on stage with the band during a break. We were standing nearby, and Duke, a warm and outgoing man, started gesturing toward Judy, Janet, Verna and myself, speaking to one of us. I looked around, wondering who he was addressing, and, low and behold, realized it was me. He was saying I was special, that I had something special. I had no clue why he had singled me out and I was embarrassed. But I did appreciate the compliment.

In 1967, The Checkmates were away from Toronto often, recording in the United States � New York and L.A. Sometime that spring they left for the States for what seemed like a longer trip than usual. Meanwhile, I finished high school and got an office job, and Verna, Judy and Janet began following another r �n� b group, Grant Smith and The Power. I decided it was time to drop out of fandom.

The Checkmates finally returned to Toronto, for an appearance at the Hawk�s Nest. I wasn�t expecting everything to be the same as it had been a few months back � this was a time of enormous change � and I was right. Still, I was surprised when I saw the guys had traded in their satin suits for hippie gear � army jackets, jeans and capes � and their hair was much longer. The music wasn�t the same, either; they were doing rock �n� roll, performing what I guessed were original compositions. Musically, they lost me; I wanted to hear the old stuff I loved so much.

I saw The Checkmates again at The Strawberry Patch in Yorkville, this time without Lee. They were playing their own psychedelic, rock �n� roll songs again. While the band was on stage, one of my friends was making a fuss at our table, indicating that she was not enjoying the music. Outside, during the band�s break, Jeff Cutler, the drummer, scowled at us, because my friend had disturbed the band while they were performing. The connection between the fans and the band had been broken.

I saw the group as Rhinoceros, after the release of Satin Chickens, at The Rock Pile (formerly The Club 888). The new sound that The Checkmates had been working on in Toronto had undergone considerable refinement and improvement. It had become exhilarating soulful, funky rock. The concert was a well-attended, exciting event. Too bad Rhinoceros didn�t capture that sound on Satin Chickens!

The Duke Edwards group, The Young Ones, was also around Toronto. In 1969, I went to see Janis Joplin at the O�Keefe Centre, not knowing who was opening for her. The opening act turned out to be Duke and his group, doing a combination of blues/r �n� b/jazz. I enjoyed the band, both their music and Duke�s vocals.

I listened to Better Times Are Coming recently. Years later, Duke�s powerful bluesy vocals are a pleasure to hear, as are Jon�s. The band was in good form and the songwriting is strong. The recording is certainly a document of its times. The cheerful, hippie-dippy anthem "It�s A Groovy World" and the optimism of "Better Times Are Coming" are a good contrast with the searing Vietnam song, "Rain Child," and the bleak outlook of "Lady of Fortune." "Old Age" is a gem, too,.

It�s a shame there wasn�t room for more material by Jon on Better Times Are Coming. John is a talented songwriter � as he proved with "I Will Serenade You."

If Rhino Records does decide to re-release some Rhinoceros material, why not release a single "Best of" CD. That way, the weaker material can be eliminated and the price can be kept down. I�ll e-mail Rhino with the suggestion.

The Web site is great. Thanks very much! The band history filled in many gaps for me. How members of Jon and Lee and The Checkmates made the giant leap from small, local venues to the big time, and then suddenly back to where they started, was a mystery to me until now. The band history is a good read, and very well researched. John Haeny�s account of the factors that hampered the success of the first Rhinoceros album is fascinating.

I hope the Web site continues to grow and flourish.

Back in the 60's I bought a 4 track (yes four track) tape It was RHINOCEROS It was the only 4 track tape the store had for 4 track was replaced by the popular 8 track. I really loved the album and played it constantly. When the tape broke a few years later, I figured someday I'll get the album. Well the album was nowhere to be found. I was at a used record store and ordered it but it was in pretty poor shape. This morning I was driving around and the lead-in to the news was playing APRICOT BRANDY! I was determined via the internet to hear some more RHINOCEROS. I am so very happy to here these great songs again

Boy did reading all of these threads bring back memorys ! Rhinoceros was a very important musikal event in my life. a fellow by the name of Jeff Cutler, who had played w: Johnny + Lee + the Checkmates replaced the Drummer in " the Crazy World of Arthur Brown" during their 2nd US tour. Being a Roadie for Arthur, i got to know Jeff well. I knew who Rabbit,J Finley,P Hodgson,L Leishman + Duke were before i had even heard Rhinocerous. While on tour w: Arthur we got to see Rhinoceros in LA when they got started.(Thanx to Jeff Cutler !) Once Arthurs Tour over, i went back to NYC and stayed w: Jeff quite a lot. Rhinoceros was living outside of NY ,right off a lake( i can't recall the area/NY or Conn)where Jeff + i had been. Remember the short lived English band: Atomic Rooster ? Vincent Crane, Arthur Browns Organ player started that band. Peter Hodgson was THE ATOMIC ROOSTER ! he had been comitted to an asylum 4 that ! Rhinoceros ended up being an NY attraction + playin all kinds of gigs ! "You're my Girl" was also very popular. the band went through changes when Billy,Doug,+ Alan left. thats when Duke Edwards, + Larry Leishman came on. the "Better Times" were at hand and they were GOOD! i was pickin up Guitbox in those days + i loved hearin' Dannys Tele ! he got me on to the right track ! Did Dannys Dad play Pedal Steel Guitar ? Anyway i moved on to different skies in 72 and loss track of Jeff Cutler + Rhinocerous. We were so much younger then... Thanks for this great site! I guess I shouldn't be surprised that the record companies haven't released any of the Rhinoceros albums, it took the record companies almost 35 years before they finally re-released the early Spirt albums. We baby boomers will probably be long gone before they re-release the Rhinoceros albums. That is why I like Napster so much, it allows us to exchange music that the record companies don't consider worth re-releasing. The bottom line is all they care about.

I first heard Rhinoceros in 1968, when I was in high-school. I borrowed a friends Rhinoceros(the first one) and the first Spirt album, and had a little place make a custom 4-track tape for me. (4-track was around a lot longer than 8-track, and sounded much better.) My custom tape didn't fall apart, the 4-track tape decks became obsolete. When my deck broke, I couldn't play the tape anymore, because you couldn't find the 4-track tape decks. I took the tape and spooled it onto my 4-track real to real, the only problem was, I could only play one side, because the other side of the tape played backwards. (All 4-track tapes were recorded in one direction, you didn't flip them over to play the other side, you just flip the head up or down.)

I've been looking for the first Rhinoceros album for almost 35 years now. I want to thank the band members for their great work: JOHN FINLEY - Vocals; ALAN GERBER - Vocals. Until their albums are re-released, we will need to keep them alive by exchanging their music with each other. My name is Joe Vetere and I had the great pleasure of being the opening act as a member of The Jones Family for Rhinoceros. I had to look up the dates in my journal, but the memories are as fresh in my mind, as if they occured yesterday. The occasions were both High School Proms. We played 6 Proms in 5 weeks, the first date was May 15 1970 at Stamford Conn, we opened for Willie and the Magnificence. May 22,Deer Park N.Y. H.S.Prom opening for The Chiffons. May 29, West Hempstead H.S. Prom at The Capri Beach Club, opening for The Great Gardino and The Bellevedeers. The next night was the Greatest thrill for myself, May 30 Maphem H.S. Prom at Malibu Beach Club opening for The James Gang, of course on Guitar was Joe Walsh but friendliness of Joe Vitale on drums made the date unforgetable. I know I was writing you about the underated group Rhinoceros. The last 2 Proms were opening for them the first was at Valley Stream N.Y. at The Hunington Town House on June 5 and the last one was on June 19 1970 for Garden City H.S. Prom where Rhinoceros blew me away,the only word to describe the evening is UNBELEVEABLE. Thanks for a memory that I will never forget.

I stumbled across this website today after reading the Iron Butterfly info on another website. In 1968 I was doing a radio show on WNTH FM (Winnetka, IL). Rock music on the FM band in Chicagoland at the time was virtually nonexistent, except for a simulcast of WVON (a low powered "soul" station from Chicago's south side). Consequentially, my show was noticed by many at the time, including Aaron Russo, owner of the Electric Theatre. He was planning to lease time on a Chicago station to play rock, but mainly to promote his club. This situation allowed me to get into the Electric Theatre insiders circle. I was to do a show on his "station" ( which was a foreign language format then). One of the bands I was priviliged to hear and talk with was Rhinoceros. I already knew about Danny Weis and liked his playing from the 1st Iron Butterfly LP. I had the album already and was looking forward to hearing them play. They were incredibly tight and well rehearsed, much more so than the majority of bands that I had seen at Aaron's club. I went nuts over Apricot Brandy, which was played a bit faster than the studio version. It was an exciting show, and being a musician, I focused in on listening to individual players as well. Great musicianship! I have recollections of seeing and talking with many artists at The Electric Theatre (which later changed its name to "The Kinetic Playground"). It was a great time for music.

Always looking for music of the era, looked up the Indian of the Group (touring this summer!! - check it out), then Billy Mundi, which led me to this "outta" site.

Went with carloads of fans to New Haven at the Stone Balloon, a very intimate club with tables, drinks and food served. The band was so up close & personal, I have never seen any other pro act that close up except for Cream & Havens at Cafe Wha?

Got all 3 Lps, actually had an 8-track of the first, and always blew out the widows with a car player.
Also saw that Jeff Beck show at Woolsey Hall (Rod Stewart on vocals) but can't remember Rhinoceros opening.
Carly was right when she sang "these are the good old days"! Rhinohandmade has been issuing limited quantities of "suddenly available" music of other artists. Maybe at least Rhinoceros could go that route. Yeah, my wife, my brother-in-law and his wife sure remember the Stone Balloon shows. Had to be winter 68/69. Remember the announcement "coming next week - Jethro Tull"! when their first LP was just getting airplay at WHCN.

I saw Rhinoceros play at my high school prom 31 years ago. Brien McMahon High School, June 1969, South Norwalk Ct. My date for the evening is now my wife and we have been married 27 years. Thinking back to that evening I remember very well dancing in the gym to "Apricot Brandy" and "I Will Serenade You". Rhinoceros was a great band and they had a lot of fun with us that night. I remember having a cigarette outside with Billy Mundi and Danny Weiss. We enjoyed this group and they are a great memory for me to this day.

Rhinoceros fans will be interested to know that Michael Fonfara just played on the sessions for a new album by ex-Muddy Waters drummer Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and, appeared with him on Open Mike With Mike Bullard (Canadian TV). Also on the session was guitarist Jack de Keyzer and, bassist Alec Fraser. Willie recorded a new song "Big Wig Woman", which was written by John Mars and Jack de Keyzer. Fonfara, Fraser and deKeyzer all appear also on the new cd by our artist, John Mars ("Whasup?").

Back in 1970 someone brought the Rhinoceros album to band rehersal to do "Apricot Brandy". We wound up doing most of the album. Not too long ago I thought about picking up some Rhinoceros on CD, sure that there would be one because of all the "retro" re-releases (some great, some shit). (Rhinoceros would put in the great category of course.) When I realized this just did not exist I tried the internet. And tried, and tried. I was so glad to find this site. I will definetely buy and CD's that may surface in the future. In the meantime, I just got a copy of "Satin Chickens" and I'm very interested in locating "Rhinoceros". If anyone is interested I got "Satin Chickens" at houseofmusic.com for 7 bucks in good condition. They seem to have more. Thanks so much for being there.

Whoa...finally. I had just about given up searching, having plugged "Rhinoceros" and "Apricot Brandy" into every search engine since 1996. With nothing new on the net, I was down to searching for Rhinoceros once a month (imagine all the permutations of Belbuekus I've invented along the way). Danny Gatton does a great version of "Apricot Brandy," by the way, which I've picked up in my search for anything Rhinoceros. It really does justice to the original, but I've gotten so tired of being returned hits that are really either him, Phish, or Smashing Pumpkins.... I didn't discover Rhinoceros until 1984, if you can believe that. Found it by accident at the Oak Ridge Public Library in Tennessee. Somebody dumped a bunch of hippie vinyl there: Workingman's Dead, Cream's Wheels of Steel, Buffalo Springfield Retrospective.... Anyway, the vinyl there was alphabetized front-to-back, and the R's (Rhinoceros) were right next to the A's (Herb Alpert--remember the Whipped Cream and Other Delights cover? Still my favorite of all time). That was half my life ago. Whoa...suddenly, I've got more important things to do than sit and watch an MP3 downloading.

I'd been looking to replace my very worn Rhinoceros LPs (1 & 2) when I came upon this site yesterday. What a great piece of work. I also enjoyed reading Nick's article. I always wondered what happened to them. I played in a rock group in Saint John, New Brunswick, in the late 60s and we covered a couple of their tunes as did at least one other local band. Now I can't seem to find anyone who knows of them but a few remember Apricot Brandy. I believe it to be one of the greatest rock instrumentals ever. I listened to and bought a lot of music back in the 60s and Rhinoceros is a band I go back to often. It's a shame their music's never been released on CD. Winter 68/9 I saw Rhino. + Vanilla Fudge as I recall...in Alexandria, Virginia armory. -R. a super live band, who like BS&Tears, sounded exactly the same/as good live as on record! (This was important to me/us at the time! but aint now, cos I never go to live shows!, but buy a cd a day however, average... -A toast to Billy Mundi!!!!! The greatest drummer ever!!!! (BAK-oom BAK-oom BAK-oom/ snare-kick grooves rule!!) I can listen to his honed/well-thot-out playing constantly.

I remember buying the first Rhinoceros album in late 1968 or early 1969. At that point, the only song I heard by the group was Apricot Brandy, which was a regular on WYSL-FM, a Buffalo, New York underground station. This album was fantastic in the 1960's and sounds great today. Music this good is timeless. I hope the original tapes are found and remastered on CD, with perhaps some bonus tracks if available.

As a young musician in the 60's, Rhino was a great influence. We did so many of their songs we were almost a Rhino cover band! They played at my high school around the time the third album came out and they were fantastic. I think it was the first concert I ever saw. I've been looking for their albums on CD for years and hope someday they will be released.

How wonderful to find a site with others that have enjoyed Rhinoceros for so many years. I've been hooked ever since my big brother took me to the New York State pavilion on the 1964 World's Fair grounds during the late 60's to see some groups that included Rhinoceros. Can't quite remember who the other bands were (maybe Procol Harem?). I too would love for the Rhinoceros albums to be released on CD. I've been nursing my multiple copies of the albums for years, and have tried digitally restoring them, but would love to find better copies. If former band members access this site, my congratulations on producing some excellent music.

I have been listening to these albums since the late 60's. I would love to see them out on CD. They were the first white soul band i ever heard. Never got to see them. Is there any live recording or even Film on these guys ? That would be fantastic ! They had to have played some festival or venue where someone was filming. Someone in theis site mentioned a show with Chuck Berry at the summer garden in Port Denver, Ontario 1970. Did the local TV stations film any of it ? Who is the local tv station in that area ? I was listening to the first album at around the same time Taj Mahal came out with his 1st solo album Natural Blues. Both are way too soulful. Please email me if anyone has any new news. jim c

Growing up in Toronto I became aware of 3 of the members of Rhinoceros, John Finley, Peter Hodgeson and Michael "Rabbit Fonfara at a young age. First as part of Jon & Lee & The Checkmates, they literally changed my views on music and hooked me for life on R&B and Soul. Then as part of the group Blackstone Rangers or Blackstone as their Lp calls them they continued on the road to the Toronto R&B Hall of Fame in my mind. There simply was noone with the electricity in their performance that came with John, not to mention the ballsyist gospel drenched voice that i have idolized for some 30+ years. As Rhinoceros they went to anew level incorporating a rock element with their native soul gospel approach. John still led the way in my mind although he shared the vocals more than I would have liked to see. Not a shot at Alan Gerber, just John is THE man from Toronto in my opinion. Later years brought the unhearlded but fantastic Bill King Lp "Homestead" where John is featured throughout. King, ex pianist for Full Tilt Boogie of Janis Joplin fame, wrote some quality stuff here including the gospel edged "Every Living Thing Has A Place In God's Heart" on which John sings his heart out including an "Otis Redding, straight from the Baptist church gospel ending where he echoes the combined voices of a powerful backing choir. Just exquisite soul and power from a short little keg of dynamite. i swear he must be all lungs!

Peter Hodgeson went on to play with many other groups including the famous Toronto group Rough Trade and continues to be just about my favourite bassist.

Rabbit Fonfara's resume looks like an allstar reunion. He's played with just about everyone and is tremendously active still in Toronto especially with Canada's longest running blues band, Downchild. Toronto's contribution to Rhinoceros cannot be understated and that's the point of my note. Craig

Great to see this site up and running. As is the case with your first Guest Book contributor, I saw Jon Finley when I was a teenager in Toronto at the CNE, as well as later at the Broom and Stone out in Scarborough. As I recall (and I DO recall, the Jon-Lee Group were a fave of mine--I have a(the?) single they made, "Bring it Down Front" b/w an instrumental entitled "Porkchops" which they used to bring the singers, Jon and Lee, on during the live shows I think). Finley couldn't make the second set the day I saw them at the CNE because he was suffering from heat prostration and exhaustion. Boy were they a GREAT band.

Anyhow, here's another piece for the puzzle. Danny Weiss and Michael Fonfara were in the Lincolns, a band with Prakash John, and Steve Ambrose up here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, back in the mid-80s when many of these guys came home to settle and have some kind of family life etc. etc. Damned if I can remember who the drummer was right this minute. I saw the Lincolns many, many times during this period, and have the one studio album I am aware that they made. They were the house band at the New Club Bluenote for a while during this period. Steve Ambrose also deserves a mention here; he was the vocalist and a really fine, unique, r&b voice.

As far as vocalists go, though, Jon Finley was a riveting performer anytime I ever saw him. He also came up and did a guest shot at the Bluenote during this 80s stretch. I was really reassured to hear that he had not lost a step, in fact was probably a better vocalist than I remembered, which is something because he was magical to me when I was a kid.

Oh, may as well make this topical too.I have copies of each of the Rhinoceros albums (two of a couple of them I think). The music made sense to me, having grown up on bands like the Jon-Lee Group, RK and the Associates (early Roy Kenner), Mandala, Bush, and of course, George Oliver, the blue-eyed Prince of Soul, amongst many, many others. These bands were my heroes because they were the first groups I saw live; what a great intro to live music! Long live R&B music, and the legendary old Toronto scene.

One of the greatest bands ever. I listen to a taped copy of the 1st album in my car at least once a month and have been looking for Rhinoceros on the web and on CD for the past several years. The songs and arrangements still burn and sound as good today as they did when 1st released. All great players. The guitar solos, exchanges and harmonies are amazing. Unfortunately, I did not see the band perform live but remember watching Jon / Lee and the Checkmates as a ten year old at the Canadian National Exhibition in the mid 60's and attending a Blackstone concert in Oshawa Ont. in the early 70's - I still have the Blackstone album.

I always liked RHINOCEROS and have been talking back and forth with Nick Warburton about them.I too am frustrated that their music has not been released on c.d. and will e-mail Rhino records. I tried contacting Electra Records art dept. a few years ago in an attempt to purchase the original art work for their debut l.p..I spoke with people in both L.A. and New York but noone had any knowledge on something from that far in the past.Someone has to know how to contact the artist Gene Szafran and or someone has to know where the art work is or what became of it. I'm glad to see this web page devoted to them and hope that by combining knowledge we can get some much deserved attention for this under appreciated group.

As a vocalist, I have worked with Michael Fonfara since the mid 80's and he is still in the Toronto area playing with The Downchild Blues Band. John Finley is living in Los Angeles, singing and working on some new material. He wrote "Let Me Serenade You", recorded by Three Dog Night. He still is the best R&B singer around.Good luck at having the albums released on CD. It would be wonderful......

A great band that seems to have been forgotten with time. There was a lot of talent in that band. Some of the R&B influence with "Say your Sorry" and "I need love" was fantastic. I came across the first two albums and tried to clean them up digitally but to no avail. I'm a keyboardist, so I have to say I was tuned in especially to the Hammond sound and of course the lead vocals.

A small auditorium on the Yale Campus. Rhino, put on a better show, however Beck was great too. I'm searching for a tape of the first album. Alan Gerber has a home page on the Web. Found it using Yahoo. He has a couple CDs released, '94 and '97 I believe. He also had a solo album out in early 70's on Shelter Records, with Danny Weis and Michael Fonfara playing on it. Haven't been able to locate any info regarding other members. I did see John Finley at a jam night in '76 at a Studio City pizza joint. He was singing and playing piano for one tune.

I don't know if it was you who told me this story but apparently the UK band Atomic Rooster chose their name after reading that one time bassist with Rhinoceros Jerry Penrod was committed to a mental asylum on the grounds that he thought he was an 'atomic rooster'. Great site for a great band. Where are they all now ...especially Gerber and Finlay? I think I've seen Danny Weiss credited with the production on some reasonably recent albums.

Nice page so far. A few things that might be of interest to you: Original bassist Jerry Penrod was also in the Iron Butterfly at the same time as Danny Weis. They both appear on the first IB album, Heavy. Guitarist Doug Hastings was a short-lived member of both the Mothers of Invention and Buffalo Springfield (where he replaced Neil Young). Michael Fonfara and Danny Weis play on Lou Reed's Coney Island Baby album (released 1976). Hope this helps, and good luck!
